A couple of quick tips for bringing down your quote are:

1. get an experienced driver to go on the policy as a named driver (but not to 'front' the policy for you, with you as a named driver). Don't ask me why that works, but apparently it sometimes does.

2. take the Pass Plus test. It'll cost around £100, your local council might subsidise that though, but even if not the discount some insurers will give you will make it worthwhile. See here: http://www.passplus.org.uk/insurers.asp

3. Slap as many security devices as you can on the car, like an approved steering wheel bar or cover. Presuming it already has an alarm / immobiliser.

Also there are two specialist insurers you can try: Adrian Flux, for 'high risk' drivers at http://www.adrianflux.co.uk and Bell Direct for drivers with zero NCB at http://www.bell.co.uk

Finally, see if you can play a couple of insurers off against each other, taking one's best offer to the other and finally offering to 'buy right now' for a further discount once one won't go any lower.

It all depends on your driving record…..not to mention the limits you pick and your deductable, as well as whether or not you choose to have rental reimbursement, towing etc.

There is no best place.
Insurance companies target market certain groups of people and give them their best rates. Groupings are based on prior insurance coverage, age, gender, credit rating, driving record, marriage status and even occupation. Your best source would be your local independent insurance agent. He/she knows who writes which group at what price.
Also, your agent can advise you on how to obtain the best quotes not just now, but also in six months. You may need some grooming.

yes, you can switch your car insurance for a cheaper quote.
And if you want to change car you dispose of the one you have and just buy another one.
Btw, shop around for insurance as their prices will differ wildly. Do the comparison sites, it's free and quick and there's no obligation to buy anything.

Cheapest? Each insurance company is different. Call a local agent who works with a lof of companies and they can find the cheapest for you.

Granted, cheapest isn't the best. If you cause an accident, they won't pay a lot for the other people. And you'll also restricted other service things like claims or 24 hours service.
